The desire for a better life – be it for healthcare, security, education, investment, retirement or other reasons - can often lead to dreams of moving to a different country. In recent years the launching of state-sponsored schemes that offer citizenship in return for investment has opened up opportunities to build just such a better life beyond borders. FFA Real Estate’s global real investment solutions encompass a diverse selection of countries around the world and facilitate the application process. In some cases citizenship can take a mere matter of months without having to set foot in the country. Here, we take a look at some of the highlights of each program.

DOMINICA

Dominica Global Citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free travel to over 100 countries - Visa-free access to Schengen and EU.
Timeframe: Passports are usually issued within 90 to 120 days after applying. Citizenship is for life, including an unlimited number of eligible dependents, and can be passed down to generations.
Residential requirements: None.
Tax incentives: Citizens do not pay any wealth, gift, inheritance, foreign income or capital gains tax.
Worth noting: Considered as one of the simplest citizenship by investment programs.
Minimum investment threshold: USD 220,000 investment in a pre-approved real estate project, or USD 100,000 donation per single applicant, plus legal, government and due diligence fees applicable to each family member..

ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

St Kitts Global Citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free travel to more than 120 countries - Visa-free access to Schengen and EU.
Timeframe: Fast processing within four months; citizenship is obtained after eight months.
Residency requirements: None
Tax incentives: No tax on worldwide income.
Investment options: USD 250,000 donation to the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation OR USD 400,000 investment in an approved real estate project.

 ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA

Antigua Global Citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free travel to over 100 countries including EU Schengen countries, UK, Canada and Ireland.
Timeframe: Citizenship is obtained within four months.
Residency requirements: A visit of five days total is required at any time during the five years following the submitting of the application, but there are no long-term residency requirements.
Investment options: USD 250,000 donation to the National Development Fund (NDF) or a USD 400,000 real estate investment in a pre-approved project, plus legal, government and due diligence fees applicable to each family member.

GRENADA

Grenada Global citizenship

Benefits:  Visa-free travel to over 100 countries, including the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong - Visa-free access to Schengen and EU.
Timeframe: Fast processing within four months.
Residential requirements: None.
Tax incentives: No tax on worldwide income. 
Minimum investment threshold: A non refundable USD 200,000 donation to the Grenada National Transformation Fund or an investment of USD 300,000 in a pre-approved project in Grenada.

CYPRUS

Cyprus Global citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free access to over 150 countries, including the ability to travel, work and study in all of Europe visa free.
Timeframe: Citizenship is obtained within three months.
Residency requirements: No visit is required.
Tax incentives: No tax on worldwide income.
Minimum investment threshold: Purchase a residence with a minimum value of €500,000. The residence can be rented out to provide income generation, but citizenship status requires continual holding of a property in Cyprus. Additionally, applicants must place €5,000,000 in a choice of government-mandated investment options or participate in a special collective investment scheme for €2.5 million, locked for three year years, provided that the total value of the investment is at least €12.5 million.

BULGARIA

Bulgaria Global citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free access to over 150 countries, including the ability to travel, work and study in all of Europe visa free.
Timeframe: Citizenship is obtained after two years.
Residency requirements: Two visits of a few days each are required.
Tax incentives: No tax on worldwide income for non residents or 10% tax on worldwide income for residents.
Minimum investment threshold:  €512,000 in governments bonds with a maturity of five years. Option to invest additional €512,000 in governments bonds one year later with a maturity of 2.5 years to expedite citizenship. Additional legal, governmental fees etc typically add up to €50,000, but are dependent on the number of applicants.

PORTUGAL

Portugal Global citizenship

Benefits: Residency authorization in Portugal for your entire family, including grandparents, parents and parents in law, and visa-free travel to EU Schengen countries.
Timeframe: Permanent residency after five years and citizenship after six years.
Residency requirements: A minimum stay in Portugal of seven days each year during the first five years.
Minimum investment threshold: €1,000,000 deposited in a bank account in Portugal for a minimum of five years, with proof of the capital transfer having been made by way of any of the following: direct bank deposit in investor’s name, investment in stocks and shares, acquisition of a property of minimum €500,000 value and held for five years.

MALTA

Malta Global citizenship

Benefits: Visa-free travel to more than 160 countries in the world including the USA, and the right to work and to establishment in all 28 EU countries and Switzerland.
Timeframe: Citizenship is obtained after an 18-month period.
Residence requirements: In the 12 months prior to granting the certificate of naturalization, proof of residence for some of the time must be made.
Worth noting: Malta’s individual investor program is limited to 1800 persons and employs the world’s strictest due diligence standards, meaning only highly respectable applicants will be admitted.
Minimum investment threshold: For the main applicant a contribution of €650,000, plus an additional €25,000 for a spouse and each child under 18.  Additionally a purchase of €350,000 for a residential property that must be held for a minimum of five years and cannot be let during this time OR the lease of a residential property with a rent of at least €16,000 per year, also for a minimum of five years, and €150,000 in a prescribed investment that must be held for five years. Additionally, each applicant must have global insurance cover of minimum €50,000.

HUNGARY

Hungary Global citizenship

Minimum investment threshold: €300,000 to be held in bonds for five years without any accrued interest.
Benefits: Temporary and permanent residents enjoy free movement throughout the EU Schengen zone, while Hungarian passport holders can travel visa-free to over 130 countries including EU Schengen countries, the UK, Canada and USA, and also have the right to live, study and work in the EU.
Timeframe: The process is swift with all qualifying applicants receiving a Hungarian ID for temporary residency (TR) and permanent residency in three to 12 months. Eight years after receiving permanent residency, applicants can qualify for Hungarian citizenship, although this requirement is expected to be reduced to five years in 2016.
Residence requirements: Language requirement, and applicants should maintain a residential address in Hungary until they qualify for citizenship but there are no physical residency requirements for applicants or any of their qualifying family members.
